MAKING THE MOST OF TRAVELING SOLO IN JAPAN

04/13/2023

Visiting some of Japan’s most iconic cities, Ciara Johnson explored new foods and tracked down iconic landmarks — and did it solo. As a travel expert who encourages others to explore the world with her solo adventures, Ciara’s itinerary is a how-to guide on making memories all on your own. Here, she reflects on some of those moments from her time spent exploring Japan.

While in Japan’s capital city of Tokyo, Ciara specifically set aside time to explore at sunset and beyond. “The city comes alive in the nighttime!

One of the sights Ciara was most excited to experience was the annual sakura, or cherry blossom, blooms. Filling Japan with fragrant white and pink blooms, the natural phenomenon happens in early spring. Cirara was able to appreciate the blooms from Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park — a destination she considers as a must-visit.

Ichiran Ramen in Tokyo lives up to the hype,” says Ciara. “It was the best ramen I had in Japan!” The noodle house is best known for its Tonkotsu, or pork-based broth.

Kyoto has a traditional vibe which is a bold contrast to the busy streets of Tokyo,” says Ciara. “Make time for both on your trip!

While visiting Kyoto, Ciara toured the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Here, it is common practice for visitors both local and foreign to pay their respect through offerings and rituals.

You can’t go to Kyoto without taking the journey through Fushimi Inari Shrine’s Senbon Torii, or thousands of torii gates.

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove just outside of Kyoto is mesmerizing! The height of the bamboo is nearly dizzying.” Popular for a reason, the grove draws visitors in with its lush greenery and otherworldly beauty.

While in Tokyo Ciara made a fun (and tasty) discovery. “Vending machines are scattered throughout every street! I found it really fun to try different drinks and snacks.
